Nana

NANA
1987, 25 MINS

Nana | The filmmaker’s affectionate portrait of her 90-year-old grandmother, the sole occupant of a deteriorating three-story house in Far Rockaway, Queens, where various renters once resided and where Nana has lived, seemingly forever, with Mike, her devoted husband, dead at 92. Punctuated by Mike’s home movies of days gone by, and commentary by the filmmaker’s mother about her childhood, Nana is a poignant reminiscence of Jewish middle-class life through the 20th century, and of a sweet-smiling, gritty survivor who—barely walking or hearing—remains queen of her kitchen, urging guests to “nosh.”
